Palace fail with defender bid
Crystal Palace have failed with a £20million bid to sign Chelsea defender Reece James as the Blues do not want to sell.
The Eagles are in the hunt for a new right-back to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who left for Manchester United, and the talented James appears to be top of the list of targets.
However, there is one problem, Chelsea rate him very highly after he impressed while on loan at Wigan last season, and they have no intention of selling.
Palace are struggling in pre-season and boss Roy Hodgson has urged the board to do more to get the players he needs, particularly in defence.
"We've got enormous problems at the back at the moment," he said. "We really don't have any defenders, to speak of.
"Aaron's gone and we've got three others injured. We will have to do the best we can to make sure we replace [Wan-Bissaka] in some way."
Carl Jenkinson, Nathaniel Clyne and Timothy Castagne are also on the wanted list and Hodgson will be hoping to get bodies in sooner rather than later.
