Schlupp targets starting spot

2nd December 2019, 13:33 by Gareth Freeman

Jeffrey Schlupp hopes his goal against Burnley boosts his chances of re-establishing himself as a regular starter for Crystal Palace.

Schlupp replaced Andros Townsend on 69 minutes at Turf Moor and within nine minutes of his introduction grabbed the Eagles’ second goal of their 2-0 win in East Lancashire.

The former Leicester wide man has featured in 12 of Palace’s 14 Premier League games this season and started eight of those matches.

Schlupp, 26, has been named among the substitutes in Palace’s last three games but hopes his strike against the Clarets – his first goal of the campaign – will see him restored to the first XI when Bournemouth visit Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

“I’ve been a little bit frustrated of late but the gaffer [Roy Hodgson] picks the team and they’ve done well,” he said, as reported by London News Online. “I’ve been waiting. I’ve managed to get on and contribute with a goal.

“The gaffer is going to put out the team he feels is best to win the game. I’ve got to produce to keep my place.”

Last season, Schlupp managed 18 Premier League starts and made 30 appearances in total.

Palace ended a run of five games without a win by taking all three points at Turf Moor although they did face every member of the current top four during that winless run.

Hodgson’s side now sit in 11th spot in the Premier League table with 18 points. The Eagles are six points clear of the relegation places and just two adrift of Tottenham in fifth spot ahead of their clash with the Cherries, part of a full round of midweek Premier League fixtures.
