Mahrez saga no excuse - Maguire

13th February 2018, 15:44 by James Mason

Harry Maguire says Leicester must take responsibility for their dip in form and not use the recent Riyad Mahrez saga as an excuse.

Mahrez was again linked with an exit from the King Power Stadium in January and, after hearing of reported interest from Manchester City, he handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a deal.

However, the Citizens failed to wrap up a move before the deadline and Mahrez, who has scored eight goals from 25 Premier League appearances this season, was forced to remain at the club until at least the summer.

The Algeria international did not turn up to training for the Foxes for a week after the failed transfer and it was unclear whether he would be reintegrated into the squad for the remainder of the campaign.

Leicester lost to Everton and drew with Swansea City before welcoming Mahrez back into the squad for the clash against the league leaders last time out, a match City won 5-1.

England international Maguire, who is also being tipped for a summer exit, says the team can't use Mahrez as an excuse for the thumping they received in the previous game.

"No, it wasn't a factor at all," he told the Leicester Mercury. "We prepared properly, we knew what we had to do. To come here we knew we had to play the perfect match.

"We gave the ball away cheaply a lot. We were a bit too open in defence and there were too many gaps between us, especially in the second-half."
