Schmeichel vows Foxes will learn

16th September 2019, 15:10 by Neil Foster

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was disappointed with the 1-0 loss at Manchester United and has vowed that Leicester City will learn from the defeat.

The Foxes went to Old Trafford with an unbeaten Premier League record in 2019-2020 but left on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline thanks to Marcus Rashford’s eighth-minute penalty.

Caglar Soyuncu was culpable for the spot-kick, fouling England’s Rashford who then sent Schmeichel the wrong way for the only goal of the game.

The result means Leicester are now fifth in the top-flight standings and one of five clubs – including the Red Devils – to have taken eight points so far this term.

City came close to scoring through James Maddison and Ben Chilwell but could not find an equaliser, and the Denmark keeper felt that his side’s lacklustre opening meant they were always going to be up against it.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Schmeichel. “You can’t start the way we did and give yourselves such a mountain to climb, but we played better towards the end of the first half.”

The East Midlanders have been tipped for big things this season with Brendan Rodgers at the helm and are targeting a top-six spot at the least.

A few pundits have suggested they might even challenge the top four. However, Schmeichel knows there is still a long way to go before they can start to think in those terms.

“We’re going to keep trying and we’ll obviously finish up the league as high as we can,” he added. “We’re going to go about our work and learn from today because there are a lot of things to learn.”

Things will not get any easier for Rodgers’ charges as Mauricio Pochettino is set to bring his Tottenham side to King Power Stadium on Saturday lunchtime.
