Aldridge calls for more edge

13th March 2018, 17:25 by Bobbie Jackson

Liverpool need to be more streetwise if they are to get key decisions from referees, according to former striker John Aldridge.

The Merseyside outfit fell to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday and they now lie five points adrift of the Red Devils in fifth.

United were the much better side in the first half when they opened up a two-goal lead courtesy of a brace from Marcus Rashford, while Eric Bailly’s own goal gave Liverpool hope of a comeback in the second period.

Liverpool felt they could have had at least one penalty at the Theatre of Dreams and Jurgen Klopp was very critical of the officials at the full-time whistle.

Aldridge believes Klopp was in the wrong to point the finger and feels his former club need to be more streetwise to win key decisions.

"Jurgen Klopp claimed the referee cost Liverpool a point at Old Trafford, but I wouldn’t agree with him on this occasion," Aldridge told the Irish Independent.

"I would argue that if Klopp’s Liverpool team were a little more streetwise, they would have got at least a draw out of the game, but they are too honest for their own good at times.

"We saw Tottenham players getting penalties at Anfield a few weeks back after falling over in the box, but Salah decided to stay on his feet and the referee then decided to give nothing.

"They try to win matches in an honest way, by out-passing and outscoring opponents and what we saw was a team winning via an alternative route."
