Liverpool and Man City players to dominate golden boot race

22nd September 2019, 17:02 by Simon Barlow

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who shared the golden boot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last season, should beware of Man City's sharpshooters this term.

Salah and Mane both bagged 22 goals for the Reds last term to spllt the award with the Arsenal striker, but the early signs of this campaign suggest that Pep Guardiola’s side have the firepower to match Liverpool’s strikeforce.

The Citizens’ 8-0 demolition of Watford on Saturday was an answer to their critics following last weekend’s shock 3-2 defeat to Norwich City.

Sergio Aguero was on the scoresheet, meaning he has notched eight times in the Premier League already.

And he is not the only potent City threat with Raheem Sterling going at a goal-a-game ratio, Bernardo Silva hitting his first ever hat-trick against the Hornets and Gabriel Jesus also looking capable of mounting a challenge for individual scoring honours if he gets enough opportunities to play in the City line-up.

Having Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva in midfield to create opportunities for them will certainly help and it’s fair to say City’s engine room looks somewhat more creative than Liverpool’s options.

All of them look like they could score 20-plus this season – even if Guardiola rotates them in and out of the side – but one of them is head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to ‘Expected Goals’ this year.

According to understat.com, Aguero’s xG is currently 1.34, which means he is expected to score slightly more than one goal per 90 minutes of action he gets for City.

If that continues over the duration of the campaign, and he plays in 38 matches, then the Argentinean is on course to hit the back of the net an incredible 50 times and set a new record in the Premier League era.

Guardiola is likely to give him a breather at some point and injury may also deny the 31-year-old the opportunity to top 40 goals, but he is certainly on target to win his first golden boot award since 2015 next May.
