Reds face anxious wait on Firmino

25th February 2019, 11:13 by Tom McGarry

Liverpool face a nervy wait to discover the extent of the ankle injury suffered by Roberto Firmino against Manchester United.

The Brazil international appeared to roll his ankle when attempting to play a pass during the first half of the goalless draw at Old Trafford, and, despite initially playing on, he was eventually replaced by Daniel Sturridge just after the half-hour mark.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted after the match that he does not know the full extent of the problem, with the 27-year-old set to undergo further scans over the coming days.

"Unfortunately, I have no clue. It was something with the ankle, that’s for sure," Klopp told reporters. "Bobby said at first he could carry on but then he showed it didn’t work."

Klopp is hopeful that Firmino won't be sidelined for too long, as he has a good knack of making a speedy recovery, although he is unlikely to feature when Liverpool play host to Watford in their next Premier League match on Wednesday.

"I don’t know exactly; it is Bobby, so it will be quicker than with all the others but first we have to know what it is exactly – and we don’t know at the moment," Klopp added.

Liverpool will certainly be hoping for Firmino to return as soon as possible, as following the match with Watford they will travel to Goodison Park to take on Everton in Sunday's Merseyside derby, while the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Bayern Munich is also just around the corner.
