Van Dijk - Maguire will face pressure
Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk says the pressure will be on new Manchester United signing Harry Maguire due to his hefty price-tag.
Maguire became the world's most expensive defender after completing his reported £80million move to Old Trafford from Leicester on Monday, surpassing the previous record that was held by van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75million in January last year.
Van Dijk has now ramped up the pressure on his fellow centre-back by insisting he will have to quickly learn how to deal with the pressure that comes with his transfer fee, as he will not get much of a settling in period.
"The price comes with pressure but it doesn't change too much because you always have pressure at big clubs like Man United," van Dijk said.
"It's not easy to completely shut off all the pressure. Quite a lot of things are more important than playing football. You need to enjoy it but the pressure will always be there."
The Dutch international certainly showed he is capable of dealing with such pressure, as he helped Liverpool to Champions League glory last term, while he was also named Premier League Player of the Season.
The 28-year-old believes switching off to outside influences is one of the keys to dealing with the pressure.
He added: "Just focus on doing what you love to do and play your best game. Get your qualities out on the pitch, enjoy your game and don't think about the other things.
"If opponents have a go during the game because you cost that much, what can you do? I'm not listening to them. It does not change anything in my head."
