City to battle Reds for midfielder

11th April 2019, 10:04 by Michael Holland

Manchester City are targeting Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez but could face strong competition from Manchester United.

City boss Pep Guardiola appears to have identified Saul as the man he wants to replace Fernandinho in the long-term and looks set to make a move once the season is over.

Saul continues to shine in the Spanish capital and City are showing a strong interest, despite the fact he is reported to have a £130million release clause in his contract.

It remains to be seen if either City or United would be will to go that high for the 24-year-old as it would mean having to smash their current transfer records.

Saul is under contract until 2026 so Atleti are in a strong position, but it has been suggested the midfielder could push for a move away from Wanda Metropolitano if either Manchester club make a move.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to freshen up his midfield as is said to be ready to battle City for Saul's signature.
