City want to tie down De Bruyne

5th December 2019, 12:45 by Tom McGarry

Manchester City are reportedly keen to discuss a lucrative new contract extension with Kevin de Bruyne to keep him at the club well into his thirties.

The brilliant Belgium midfielder became the highest-paid player in the club’s history when he signed a new £320,000-per-week agreement back in January 2018.

And now City insiders claim the club’s top-brass will look next year to keep their playmaker happy and discuss fresh terms before next summer’s European Championships.

The Citizens are currently negotiating with winger Raheem Sterling over a new deal which could be worth as much as £380,000-per-week, so De Bruyne would certainly be entitled to ask for parity.

The 28-year-old missed the majority of last season’s domestic clean sweep of trophies by City because of injuries, but has reminded everyone this campaign of his undoubted quality.

He leads the Premier League charts with nine assists this term and ranks number one with total chances created, proving he is back to his best.

City paid £54million to sign De Bruyne from Wolfsburg in 2015, seeing off interest from Paris Saint-Germain at the time for the Chelsea reject’s signature.

De Bruyne is now one of the senior players in City’s squad and there have been signs this season that he is taking on more of a leadership role in the team, much to the delight of boss Pep Guardiola.

The champions will lose veteran midfielder David Silva at the end of this season, having already waved goodbye last summer to influential skipper Vincent Kompany.

Club record goalscorer Sergio Aguero’s contract runs out at the end of the 2021 season, so City know they have plenty of big earners coming off the wage bill and want to put that to good use – mainly recognising further their pivotal talents in De Bruyne and Sterling.
