Benfica starlet on United radar

25th April 2019, 11:09 by Alex Jack

Manchester United scouts Joao Ferreira and Simon Wells both saw Benfica starlet Joao Felix score twice in a 6-0 romp over Maritimo.

And Old Trafford sources have confirmed the pair were left purring by the 19-year-old forward, who is being courted by Europe's elite.

Rivals Manchester City are leading the chase and have already held talks with both his club and agent Jorge Mendes, with a view to getting close to his £105m buyout clause.

Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has also urged his club to pull out all the stops to sign his fellow countryman, being likened to him in so many ways.

However, United are clearly making moves of their own to try and see what all the fuss is about over Felix, who took his tally for this season to 16 goals in front of their top Portuguese spy Ferreira.

Perhaps even more relevant was him being accompanied by Wells, a trusted technical lead scout at United when it comes to reinforcing the opinions of their global network.

The Red Devils know they are playing catch-up but have already seen enough of Felix to feel they can offer the youngster a similar career path to the one they put Ronaldo on.
