Mata signs new United contract

19th June 2019, 17:48 by Tom McGarry

Juan Mata has committed his future to Manchester United by penning a new deal that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2021.

The Spaniard's previous deal had been due to expire at the end of this month and there had been growing speculation that he would join Ander Herrera in opting to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer.

However, Mata, who has scored 45 goals in 218 appearances since joining United from Chelsea in January 2014, has now opted to extend his stay with the club and he is looking forward to what he hopes will be an exciting future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"It is a real honour to continue to represent this amazing club and our incredible fans. I have been at Manchester United for five years and I am proud to call Old Trafford my home," Mata said.

"I am looking forward to working with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and his fantastic coaching staff; the vision that they have for the club is truly exciting and I am so happy that I will be a part of that."

Solskjaer, who expected to oversee a period of transition at United this summer, is also glad to have tied Mata down to a new deal, as he feels the 31-year-old plays a vital role for the club both on and off the pitch.

"Juan is the ultimate professional and one of the most intelligent players I have worked with. He is a great example to our younger players in his approach," Solskjaer said.

"As well as everything he brings on the pitch, we have some fantastic young players here and I know that Juan's vast experience will help them to reach their potential over the coming seasons."
