Matic tipped for summer exit

21st November 2019, 12:55 by Alex Jack

Nemanja Matic is preparing to leave Manchester United next summer for free rather than seek an earlier exit in January.

The Old Trafford and Serbia midfielder is in the final year of his contract and knows the Red Devils are willing to let him leave when the transfer window reopens in the new year.

United want to remove his £150,000-per-week pay packet from the wage bill and have even told his advisers they could accept a nominal fee of less than £1.5m to hasten his exit.

Matic, however, who was signed by former boss Jose Mourinho from Chelsea for £40m in 2017, is in no rush to force a move elsewhere.

Sources close to the 31-year-old state the majority of the interest so far has been on the understanding that Matic will be a free agent, with a sizeable signing-on fee to sweeten the pot.

Italian giants Juventus are reportedly keen on the giant Serb, whose career started brightly at the Theatre of Dreams, before losing his way in the first-team during the past year.

The Serie A champions, however, have spent big the last two years, bringing in superstar Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid, in addition to the £70m summer outlay on Ajax and Netherlands centre back Matthijs de Ligt.

Matic is free to speak to clubs on the continent in January, but United know the ongoing process is now totally out of their control.

The giant Serb won three Premier League titles during his two spells at Stamford Bridge, but he has failed to pick up any further silverware during his time in Manchester.

Matic has managed just three goals in 92 appearances for United, underlining why the club’s powerbrokers would like him out the door as soon as possible.

United, who currently find themselves in seventh place in the Premier League table, are back in action on Sunday when they make a trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United.
