United set for Pogba talks

26th March 2019, 11:41 by Neil Foster

Reports claim Manchester United will open contract talks with Paul Pogba despite his recent comments about Real Madrid.

The Old Trafford midfielder has raised eyebrows during the international break after he stated: "Real Madrid's a dream for anyone and (Zinedine) Zidane's there."

However, United insiders have insisted the Red Devils have no plans to sell the World Cup winner and, in actual fact, are planning to sit down this summer and discuss with him a new long-term deal.

It has also been pointed out that while Zidane is a big hero for Pogba, the player resisted the pull of his fellow Frenchman and snubbed a move to the Bernabeu to return to United when he left Juventus in 2016.

Pogba is contracted until 2021 and bosses at the Theatre of Dreams want to rebuild their squad around the France international, supposedly armed with a summer budget of around £200m to bring in new faces.

It is understood the £89m star has already held a series of chats with caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and there is certainly no indication Pogba is unhappy playing under the Norwegian, who remains the hot favourite to be installed on a permanent basis.

Pogba earns around £280,000-per-week and United know they will certainly have to dig deep, especially if Madrid now come knocking in the next few months with an offer which is far in excess of the previous world record fee paid to bring him back to Manchester.
