China trip will be vital - Lascelles

12th July 2019, 17:24 by Aidan Perkins

Jamaal Lascelles says Newcastle's Premier League Asia Trophy games this summer will act as the perfect preparation for the new season.

The Magpies are set to jet out to China on Saturday for their summer tour for games against familiar opponents in Nanjing and Shanghai.

Newcastle feature in the opening match against Wolves before they take on Premier League champions Manchester City and then West Ham United in the four-team tournament.

Lascelles says the squad are looking forward to the games and believes if they can get positive results then it will set them up nicely for the season ahead.

He said on the club's website: "We are travelling to China and it's going to be a great experience playing in a completely different country with different surroundings and environment. We are very thankful to be taking part.

"A big part of it will be gaining experience, seeing different situations at the same time. Winning games will put a marker down and set an example for what we are going to do during the new season.

"I do think every game we play, especially in pre-season, will push us toward a good start of the season. We will be looking to win the games."

Newcastle have confirmed a 27-man squad for the tour, which includes Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Lascelles, Matt Ritchie and Sean Longstaff. Florian Lejeune and Rob Elliot will not travel due to injuries, while Miguel Almiron, Christian Atsu and Henri Saivet have all been given extra time off this summer following recent international action.
