Gayle offered Premier League hope

5th August 2019, 16:00 by Bobbie Jackson

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle will be handed the chance to impress in the Premier League, according to Steve Bruce.

Gayle made the move to St James' Park from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016, penning a five-year deal, and he hit 23 goals to help Newcastle win promotion from the Championship.

He remained part of the set-up with the Magpies in 2017-18 but was unable to continue his goalscoring antics as he found the back of the net on just six occasions in the Premier League.

Former boss Rafael Benitez opted to loan Gayle out to West Brom last term in order to take Salomon Rondon in the other direction for the campaign.

The 29-year-old once again impressed in the second tier and he ended last season with 23 league goals to his name.

Bruce, who has already added attacking options to his squad in the shape of Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin this summer, insists Gayle is set to be a big part of his plans too.

Gayle has always been part of my plans," Bruce said. "I've tried to buy him twice but could never afford him.

"We've got a nice balance in attack."
