Lascelles expects Newcastle improvement

15th April 2019, 09:47 by James Mason

Jamaal Lascelles believes there is more to come from Newcastle United after they close in on Premier League safety.

Friday's 1-0 victory at Leicester City, coupled with Cardiff City's defeat to Burnley on Saturday, has moved the Magpies 10 points clear of the relegation zone and put them a step closer to being mathematically safe.

Newcastle have four games left to play - taking on Southampton, Brighton, Liverpool and Fulham - and captain Lascelles is confident the current squad are capable of going on to the next level.

He told the Chronicle: "We know we can get better. That doesn't mean by signing players, it just means by keeping on listening and learning from the manager.

"We're still getting to know the league really, not that many players have played that much Premier League football.

"When we gain a bit more experience, we'll get better."

Rafael Benitez's men return to action on Saturday when they welcome the Saints, who beat Wolves 3-1 last time out, to St James' Park.
