Lascelles keen to see Benitez stay

5th April 2019, 11:09 by James Mason

Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles says he will do everything in his power to get Rafael Benitez to stay on as manager.

Benitez's contract runs out in the summer and reports emerging on Friday have suggested the Spanish tactician has employed an advisor to help him find a job in the French top flight for next season.

It has also been claimed Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who still has the club up for sale, is preparing to offer the former Liverpool boss a new three-year contract worth £15million.

English defender Lascelles has now weighed in on the situation and he insists everyone at the club is desperate to see Benitez extend his stay at St James' Park past the summer.

"We'll try to do anything we can to seal this manager down to a contract," he said. "If that means us getting the job done and getting as safe as possible, then excellent.

"We'll just concentrate on our football and let the rest take care of itself."
