Magpies duo remain doubtful
Newcastle are sweating over Federico Fernandez's and Ciaran Clark's fitness ahead of Wednesday's clash with Manchester United.
Spanish defender Fernandez sustained a knock to his hip during the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw at Watford and was subsequently replaced at half-time by Fabian Schar.
Magpies boss Rafael Benitez admits the former Swansea man is struggling to be fit for the visit of United to St James' Park although he will be further assessed ahead of kick-off.
Benitez told the Chronicle: "We have enough bodies, but always it is not good news to lose any player."
Fellow defender Clark has been sidelined with an ankle complaint although the signs are that he will be available for Wednesday.
Jonjo Shelvey made his return from injury as a second-half substitute against Watford and could now earn a start, particularly as Ki Sung-yeung remains away on international duty with South Korea.
