Magpies to welcome back Shelvey

28th December 2018, 14:18 by James Mason

Jonjo Shelvey is set to return for Newcastle United's Premier League match at Watford on Saturday.

England international Shelvey last played for the Magpies in the 3-0 home defeat to West Ham United on December 1 but he is back in contention after overcoming a thigh strain.

The 26-year-old midfielder is expected to earn a place on the bench at least for the clash at Vicarage Road as Newcastle look to bounce back from the 4-0 thumping at the hands of Liverpool last time out.

Spanish tactician Rafael Benitez also confirmed Irish defender Ciaran Clark and goalkeeper Karl Darlow are both missing for the match due to ankle and elbow injuries respectively.

He said at a press conference: "Clark and Darlow are still not available. The rest are available, including Jonjo Shelvey."

Having rested Salomon Rondon for the defeat to Liverpool, Benitez is expected to recall the Venezuela international whilst Ayoze Perez and Fabian Schar are also in line to return.
