Newcastle confirm Almiron blow as star aims for June return

24th April 2019, 10:48 by Simon Barlow

Miguel Almiron still hopes to play in the Copa America in June after being ruled out for the rest of Newcastle's season.

The Paraguayan suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday's 3-1 win over Southampton and left the field in tears in the 64th minute.

Magpies medics have now confirmed his initial fears that the degree of the injury is too severe to overcome in the final weeks of the current campaign.

But, while the 25-year-old will miss this weekend's trip to Brighton and the subsequent games against Liverpool and Fulham, he can still make the Copa America in June.

Paraguay play a pre-tournament friendly against hosts Brazil on June 8 - six days before the tournament begins.

Ruben Almiron, the player's father, told ABC Color that there was never any concern he would miss the Copa America.

"He suffered a muscle contracture and will be off for three weeks. It's because of the load of matches that he's been having," he said.

"Now he's going to rest. With the recovery and this break I think we will be 100 per cent for the Copa America.

"He will miss the last three games of his team, but he has already fulfilled their goal, they have already ensured survival."
