Perez puts team's achievement before his own

16th May 2018, 19:50 by Tom Hill

Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez insists he is proud of his efforts this year but the team's achievements come first.

The Spaniard scored his fifth and sixth goal in seven matches last weekend as he grabbed a brace against Chelsea.

Perez was the only Magpies player to score double figures this season and his strike-rate helped Newcastle avoid relegation.

Under Rafa Benitez, Newcastle managed to finish 10th on their return from the Championship and Perez insists the club's achievements surpass his.

He told the Northern Echo: "I'm so happy to be able to end the season scoring lots of goals. Two goals against Chelsea, another two at St James' Park, and ten is a great number for me.

"But, if I'm honest, what I am most pleased about is that we finished in tenth place because we deserved to finish there at the end of the season.

"It has been an amazing season for the team. We have to be proud of ourselves because we have done a great job all year. The city has to be proud of the team, and we also have to be proud of ourselves."
