Shelvey ruled out of Chelsea contest
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed Jonjo Shelvey is out of Saturday's clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
England international Shelvey has been struggling with a thigh injury this season and he has failed to fully recover from the issue in time for the Premier League outing in London.
Wales defender Paul Dummett and goalkeeper Karl Darlow have also been ruled out of the contest, but defensive trio Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune are all available for selection.
"Jonjo, Dummett and Darlow are not available," Benitez said at a press conference. "Fede (Fernández) and Clark are both available. Lejeune, who came in against Blackburn, is fine. So, we have some good news and some bad news."
Venezuelan Salomon Rondon is expected to be reinstalled to the starting XI after being an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup third round.
The Magpies, who last won at Stamford Bridge in May 2012, are aiming to arrest an alarming slump in form that has seen the club slip closer to the relegation places.
James Mason grew up in Northumberland so is entrenched in both the football and golf scenes. A low handicap golfer, he also follows Newcastle United and predicts big things under Rafa Benitez.
