Idah ‘ready to step in’ for Canaries

11th September 2019, 17:33 by Craig Smithson

Teenage striker Adam Idah has told Norwich head coach that he is "ready to step in" to the first team if he is required.

The 18-year-old is highly thought of at Carrow Road and that was reflected in the new contract he was handed in the summer which ties him to the East Anglian outfit until summer 2023.

Idah has worked his way through the youth ranks after joining from Corinthians in Cork in summer 2017 and he is now vying to feature in Farke’s first-team squad on a regular basis.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, who came off the bench to help his side record a come-from-behind 3-1 in Sweden in a Euro 2021 qualifier on Tuesday, has already made his debut for Norwich.

But that turned out to be a forgettable night as he scored an own goal and squandered a handful of chances as the Canaries crashed out of the EFL Cup 1-0 at the hands of Crawley Town last month.

Despite a poor start to life as a first-teamer, it has not put Idah off wanting a taste for more and he is looking to feature in Farke’s plans at some point.

Teemu Pukki is undroppable at the moment having blasted five goals in the opening month of the campaign, but Idah could get the nod ahead of fellow forwards Josip Drmic and Dennis Srbeny.

When asked about the possibility of playing, with champions Manchester City up next on Saturday, he told the Irish Examiner: “My debut was a big night for myself and I’ve stayed training with the first-team since.

“I’ve really got up to the speed of things and am ready to step in if asked.”

If chances in the first team are not forthcoming, Idah has also opened the door to going out on loan for the second half of the season, but he is hopeful Farke wants to “keep me around the place”.
