Danish defender reveals interest in Southampton switch
Genk defender Joakim Maehle admits he was "interested" in joining Southampton during the January transfer window.
Southampton failed to add any fresh faces to their squad last month despite Ralph Hasenhuttl understood to have been interested in a number of candidates.
Reports claimed that Maehle was high on his wanted list but Genk refused to part company with one of their regular starters.
Maehle was well aware of the interest surrounding his future and admits he wouldn't have had any issues with heading to St Mary's, but fully understands Genk's decision to reject their advances.
"I'm not going to say that I wasn’t interested," Maehle said. "This was a nice proposal from a big club from a top competition. But at the same time, I have full understanding of Genk's point of view.
"They have also been very clear from the beginning: in this winter market all starters remain on board.
"I can only respect that. Because let me make it clear: I am still very happy here. I do not grieve but fully focus on the rest of the season. We still have so much to gain."
