Defender closes in on Saints switch

11th July 2018, 13:23 by Gareth Freeman

Southampton are close to completing the capture of defender Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach in an £18million deal.

Saints agreed the fee with the Bundesliga club last week and it is understood the Denmark international had a medical on the south coast on Tuesday.

Southampton are yet to agree personal terms with the 25-year-old but are hopeful they can finalise the move in the coming days and a transfer is expected to be confirmed by the start of next week.

Vestergaard has spent the entirety of his senior career in Germany, having previously played for Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen, and was a member of Denmark's World Cup squad, although he didn't make an appearance for the Danes in Russia.
