Hughes lined up by Saints
Former Stoke boss Mark Hughes is the leading contender to replace Mauricio Pellegrino, who has been sacked by Southampton.
Pellegrino has finally paid the price for Southampton's poor season and the hunt is now on for his successor after the board took action on Monday night.
Saints lost 3-0 at Newcastle on Saturday and sit just one place and one point above the relegation zone after only claiming one victory in their last 17 Premier League outings.
Hughes made 52 appearances for Saints between 1998 and 2000 before leaving the club for Everton, and reports suggest he could be heading back to the club.
The Welshman was sacked by Stoke following a disappointing campaign that has seen the Potters also sucked into a relegation battle, but his time at the bet365 Stadium was generally successful.
Marco Silva, who left Watford earlier this season, is also in the frame, along with Ex-West Ham chief Slaven Bilic, as Saints look to make a quick appointment.
