Hannover have faith in £18m Potters flop

16th May 2018, 14:20 by Simon Barlow

Hannover 96 are showing confidence in their ability to sign £18million Stoke City flop Kevin Wimmer this summer.

Reports in Germany suggest Hannover believe they have a good chance of persuading the 25-year-old defender to move back to the Bundesliga.

Last August, former Stoke boss Mark Hughes paid Tottenham £18m for the Austria international, who had hardly figured in the Spurs side.

And it proved to be a poor decision as Wimmer failed to make any lasting impression on the first-team at bet365 Stadium.

Stoke must now decide how much they want for the ex-Cologne man, who won't fetch anything like the amount the Potters paid for him.

Hannover boss Martin Kind told SportBuzzer: "We could probably convince him to come to us – but there is also his club."

Coach Andre Breitenreiter and manager Horst Heldt have apparently already flown to England to convince Wimmer that Hannover should be his next destination and Breitenreiter has "expressed confidence this had been achieved".

Wimmer is under contract at Stoke until 2022 and, although his wages would probably have been steep for the Bundesliga club, their confidence suggests that his personal terms may be within their scope.
