Tottenham confirm Mourinho appointment

20th November 2019, 11:54 by Michael Holland

Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager after he penned a contract until the summer of 2023.

Spurs have wasted no time whatsoever in replacing Mauricio Pochettino, who was axed from his position late on Tuesday night, with the club sitting 14th in the Premier League.

It soon became very clear that Mourinho was the man that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wanted on board, and the fact he was out of work after leaving Manchester United last season, made it a quick and smooth appointment.

Talks continued late into Tuesday night and Tottenham confirmed the deal had been completed first thing on Wednesday morning.

Mourinho is thought to have turned down numerous opportunities to return to management following his departure from Old Trafford but this one was simply too good to turn down.

“The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me,” said the 56-year-old Portuguese. “Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Levy is also delighted with the capture, saying Spurs now have one of the most successful managers in football.

Pochettino’s time in charge of Spurs was a success, but it came without a trophy, and in Mourinho they now have a manager who can deliver silverware as he has proven at every club he has been with.

Top four will be the aim for Mourinho and Spurs this season, but they are currently 11 points behind Manchester City in fourth and have work to do.

“He (Mourinho) has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician,” Levy added. “He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Mourinho’s first game in charge will be the derby clash against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
