Barca star on Hornets radar

19th November 2018, 17:42 by Jack Ogalbe

Watford are reportedly one of the clubs considering a move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The Belgian, who played in the Premier League for Arsenal between 2009 and 2014, has predominantly played a support role in his four-and-a-half seasons at the Nou Camp.

Much like at the Emirates, injuries have prevented him from making a lasting impact, with just 32 La Liga appearances to his name.

It appears unlikely the 33-year-old will sign an extension to his current contract, which runs until the end of this season.

Reports in Spain say he would prefer a return to England and the Hornets are one of several clubs keen to speak to him once he enters the final six months of his contract in January.

Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, while the Blaugrana are expected to move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt next summer.

As well as Watford, Southampton are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 70-cap Belgium international's situation in Cataluna.
