Dahlberg eyeing Watford exit

9th October 2019, 16:48 by Bobbie Jackson

Watford goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg is hoping to secure a loan move away from the club when the January window opens.

Dahlberg signed for the Premier League side in January 2018, penning a five-and-a-half-year deal after impressing in his homeland with IFK Goteborg.

With first-team chances hard to come by, Watford loaned the stopper back to his boyhood club for the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign.

He spent last season with Watford but failed to make a single senior appearance and has understandably been left feeling frustrated.

The 20-year-old still remains well down the pecking order at Vicarage Road after a loan exit in the summer didn’t materialise.

Ben Foster is the clear number one with the Hertfordshire side with Heurelho Gomes and Daniel Bachmann battling it out for the number two spot.

Gomes’ decision to extend his contract by a further year last summer, having indicated that he was set to retire, wouldn’t have come as positive news for Dahlberg.

And the Sweden international is eager to head off in search of regular football as he looks to continue his development during the second half of the season.

Dahlberg told Fotbollskanalen: “It feels like I need playing time and I haven’t gotten that far.

“At the same time, there is not much to do when the windows are closed and then you have to make the best of the situation and be ready for January and see if there will be any kind of move then.”

His current position in the goalkeeping ranks doesn’t appear to have dampened Dahlberg’s spirits too much and the stopper remains focussed on eventually claiming the number one jersey.

Patience is key for the youngster with Gomes expected to finally call time on his career at the end of the term, while Foster, who turns 37 in April, is unlikely to have more than a couple of years left at the top level.
