Watford strike deal for Barcelona defender
Watford have reportedly reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign defender Thomas Vermaelen in January.
The Hornets made a strong start to 2018-19 but they have struggled to keep clean sheets and head coach Javi Gracia is keen to strengthen his defensive options.
Indeed, they have kept three clean sheets from 13 Premier League outings, having conceded 17 in total, and steps have already been taken to address their issues at the back.
Reports suggest that a deal has been agreed in principle to bring in former Arsenal defender Vermaelen when the winter window opens.
Vermaelen, who made 150 appearances for the Gunners, left England for Barcelona in 2014 but his career has stalled due to injuries.
It’s unclear what sort of fee will be handed over for the Belgium international but Vermaelen’s wealth of experience will be a big bonus for Watford if he can stay fit.
