Brighton 1-1 West Ham

18th August 2019, 09:43

West Ham picked up their first point of the new Premier League season after holding Brighton to a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.

The two sides came into the game on the back of hugely contrasting fortunes in their opening games after the Seagulls romped to a 3-0 victory at Watford, while West Ham were given a 5-0 mauling on home soil against reigning champions Manchester City.

Brighton enjoyed the better of the first half with new signing Leandro Trossard denied a goal by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) midway through, while the Hammers failed to have an effort of note.

West Ham struck with their first effort on target with Javier Hernandez breaking the deadlock just after the hour, but Trossard was rewarded for his performance with the equaliser moments later.

Brighton were the better side, but the Hammers managed to secure a hard-earned point to get them off the mark.

Graham Potter made just one change to his Brighton side on the back of their win at Vicarage Road last Saturday as Trossard replaced Jurgen Locadia to make his debut.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini made five changes to the side which were thrashed last weekend.

Summer signing Pablo Fornals secured his first start, while Angelo Ogbonna, Arthur Masuaku, Robert Snodgrass and Javier Hernandez came in for Fabian Balbuena, Aaron Cresswell, Felipe Anderson, Michail Antonio and record signing Sebastien Haller, who missed out through injury.

Dan Burn should have put the ball into the net inside the first minute when he met a Pascal Gross free-kick into the area, but somehow guided his header over the top from close range. However, the raised offside flag will no doubt have been some consolation as it would not have counted anyway.

The first effort on target came in the 22nd minute when Dale Stephens tried his luck from distance, but Lukasz Fabianski pulled off an acrobatic save to deny him.

Trossard thought that he had scored a debut goal to put the Seagulls in front on 27 minutes when he met a cross inside the area and crashed a fine volley into the net, only for VAR to rule it out after the provider Burn was spotted in an offside position in the build-up.

Brighton continued to look the more likely to open the scoring with Glenn Murray heading over in a decent position on 33 minutes.

It took West Ham until the 44th minute to muster a first serious attempt when Snodgrass’ cross was only half-cleared to Declan Rice who blazed his effort over the top from the edge of the box.

Trossard should have found the net early in the second half but made a complete mess of his effort inside the area and Fabianski gathered.

The Seagulls were made to pay for their profligacy on 61 minutes when the Hammers took the lead against the run of play when Hernandez collected a through ball from Snodgrass and guided his effort past Mat Ryan.

However, they were only behind for four minutes when Trossard finally got the goal his play merited with a composed strike across Fabianski and into the far corner of the net.
