Hammers boss sets sights on Liverpool

1st February 2019, 14:28 by Gareth Freeman

Manuel Pellegrini hopes his West Ham side can have a say in the title race by seeing off Liverpool at the London Stadium on Monday.

The Reds head into the next round of fixtures with a five-point lead at the top of the table although Pellegrini is convinced West Ham can claim a victory over them.

The Hammers have beaten Manchester United and Arsenal at home this season, as well as taking a point against Chelsea, and Pellegrini now hopes they can get a result against Liverpool.

"I don't know if they are nervous or not, but I think we can beat Liverpool on Monday night because every team in the Premier League can beat another one, look at Newcastle beating Manchester City [2-1 on Tuesday]," he told reporters.

"I remember the last race I had with Liverpool for the title in 2014 [when managing Man City], City were six points behind them but with three games in hand, so we had a lot of pressure and won the title.

"I repeat, we want to beat Liverpool. If we want to beat Liverpool, we need to play a good game, defend well, as they have top players and we need to play with a high pace as we have done against a lot of teams at home, so we have all the chances to do it again."
