Nuno not targeting top six

16th July 2019, 10:06 by Dan McCarthy

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo says the club are not aiming for a top-six finish despite the success of last season.

Last term, Wolves finished seventh and qualified for the Europa League after a remarkable first year back in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship.

This season will be undoubtedly tougher, with the addition of a European competition, as they prepare to take on either B36 Torshavn or Crusaders in the second qualifying round next week.

And the boss insists that he does not think about long-term targets and will only continue to take the new season one game at a time.

"We are not fighting for the top six," Nuno said ahead of Wolves' first game in the Premier League Asia Trophy in China against Newcastle.

"We have to add players to compete against the top six but it is not in our heads to compete for the top six. We compete game by game. We can only repeat what happened last season if we work harder and dedicate more. We are conscious it has to be like that.

"The players know each season is going to be more difficult but I really believe we can improve the quality of our game. It's not on our horizon to compete for the top six, we can only try to play good football, football our fans enjoy."
