Burgess named South Sydney captain

18th April 2019, 18:30 by Tom Hill

Sam Burgess insists it is an honour to captain the South Sydney Rabbitohs after being unveiled as Greg Inglis' replacement.

Inglis confirmed his retirement earlier this week, which meant the Bunnies needed to find a new captain.

Injuries have forced the Australia international to retire halfway through the season and Burgess has now been given the chance to lead the NRL giants.

The 30-year-old had been part of a five-man leadership group but he is now the club's skipper after playing 168 games in the NRL.

Coach Wayne Bennett has claimed he is the obvious choice for the role and Burgess admits he cannot wait to lead the team into battle.

He told reporters: "It's a great honour and privilege to captain the greatest club in the NRL.

"I'm looking forward to leading the team out on Friday against the Bulldogs, and I'm also looking forward to our team putting our best foot forward each and every week."
