Furner vows to learn from Wire loss

2nd February 2019, 20:03 by Jack Ogalbe

Leeds boss David Furner says his side will need to learn quickly after losing 26-6 away at Warrington on Saturday.

Both teams were looking to set the tone for their seasons on the opening weekend of 2019 but it was the Wire who thrived, new signing Blake Austin leading the way.

Austin crossed for his maiden try for the club on 57 minutes, adding to the lead after Stefan Ratchford, Josh Charnley and Daryl Clark had all crossed for the hosts.

Leeds could only manage a late consolation score from Stevie Ward and Furner was rightly irked by what he saw from his side in his first competitive game in charge.

The Australian slammed his players for giving the Wolves too much respect, while also admitting that they need to learn to cut out individual errors if they want to succeed in 2019.

He said: "The first half summed it up. We had opportunities to put pressure on and we didn't. We gave a team that played in two finals last year opportunities that we didn't need to.

"I don't think we showed what this team is capable of, but it's round one.

"We sustained some really good defensive sets in the first 20 minutes, then we get a penalty and don't kick it out. Little things make big things. We'll learn from it no doubt."
