Gallen - Players need another four weeks

29th March 2020, 12:52 by Tom Hill

Former player Paul Gallen claims the NRL need to introduce a four-week pre-season programme once the coronavirus pandemic ends.

The 38-year-old hung up his boots at the end of last season, but he is still close to the players at former club Cronulla Sharks.

The NRL have banned players from their respective training grounds with all playing staff on individual workout programmes from home.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg says a pre-season schedule is being considered, but Gallen says the players will need at least four weeks to get back up to speed.

He told Nine's Footy Show: "I do think they need a good 4-6 weeks.

"If we send these guys back on the field with one week's preparation, all sorts of things can go wrong.

"We worry about players' health at the moment, but there could be detrimental impacts on players' knees and shoulders.

"It's all sorts of different things that players need to get back up to speed to play again."
