Supporters incident mars Perpignan clash

4th August 2019, 10:12 by James Mason

The RFL and Super League have slammed supporters after ugly scenes followed Saturday's game between Catalans and Warrington.

It was a hot-tempered affair both on-and-off the pitch in Perpignan as Catalans ran out comfortable 30-10 winners to climb to fifth, while Warrington stay second in Super League and 12 points behind St Helens, who have now won the League Leaders' Shield as a result of that defeat for the Wolves.

However, Dragons duo Sam Tomkins and Michael McIlorum, along with Wolves' Jake Mamo, all saw red after the final whistle for their roles in an on-pitch bust-up and the on-field violence then spread into the stands.

Both sets of supporters clashed at Stade Gilbert Brutus and, in a joint statement, the Rugby Football League and Super League confirmed there will be an investigation.

"The scenes are alien to Super League and have no place in our game," the statement said. "We will be taking firm action to make it clear this behaviour is totally unacceptable."

Catalans chairman Bernard Guasch also condemned the actions of the fans, saying: "We are shocked at what happened. The Gilbert Brutus Stadium has always been a festive place and we are saddened with the scenes we saw tonight.

"We have never witnessed such incidents in 13 years in Super League. We are now waiting for the CCTV footages before making any decision."

Warrington also released a statement revealing their displeasure, adding: "The club is working in conjunction with Catalans Dragons and Super League to gather further information, and determine the appropriate action required.

"The club does not condone this behaviour and strongly believes that scenes like this have no place in our sport."
