England still without Itoje for Scots' clash

11th March 2019, 15:31 by Craig Smithson

Maro Itoje has failed to recover from a knee injury in time for England's final Six Nations clash against Scotland at Twickenham.

The 24-year-old Saracens lock initially suffered knee ligament damage in England's opening win against Ireland in Dublin.

Itoje narrowly missed the defeat in Wales but looked certain to feature in Saturday's 57-14 defeat of Italy, only to hurt the same knee in training last week.

He has subsequently been left out of the 31-man squad for the Calcutta Cup game against the Scots, which England need to win while hoping Ireland beat Wales in Cardiff in order for them to secure the Six Nations title.

The Rugby Football Union said: "Maro Itoje has returned to his club Saracens to continue rehabilitation."

Head coach Eddie Jones has the uncapped 20-year-old Harlequins fly-half Marcus Smith included in his squad, while Bath centre Jonathan Joseph is also involved.

Charlie Ewels and Elliott Stooke are both included as second-row cover, but Harlequins flanker and former England captain Chris Robshaw in absent.
