Life after Wales not on Gatland's mind

1st February 2019, 11:35 by Chris Rivers

Wales head coach Warren Gatland says he hasn't thought about what he will do next as he prepares for his final Six Nations campaign.

The New Zealander took the reins in 2008 and Wales have enjoyed a successful spell under his guidance, winning two Grand Slams in 2008 and 2012, while he also took them to a World Cup semi-final in 2011.

The 55-year-old will call time on his stint as head coach after this year's World Cup but his first focus is on the forthcoming Six Nations, which gets underway on Friday night with Wales' clash against France in Paris.

The Welsh haven't won the Six Nations since 2013 when Rob Howley was the interim head coach, Gatland having taken a sabbatical to oversee the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia that year.

Given his success as Wales coach, Gatland is likely to receive plenty of job offers after the World Cup but he says that can wait as he targets a third Six Nations title, believing his team have a good chance of toppling champions Ireland.

"I haven't really contemplated anything other than winning the Six Nations," said Gatland.

"I've been pretty open that we have a good chance of winning the Six Nations.

"I think if we win this first game, we can win it given we have home games against England and Ireland.

"We came second last year which was OK. It would be great for us to win the Six Nations, but we know there's the World Cup later in the year."
