Schmidt reveals Sexton fitness hopes
Johnny Sexton should be fit for Ireland's Six Nations clash against France while Joe Carbery could play, according to Joe Schmidt.
The defending champions were expecting to be without Carbery for their remaining two matches - against Les Bleus in Dublin on March 10 and away in Wales on March 16 - because of a hamstring injury which ruled him out of the 26-16 win against Italy last Sunday.
Fly-half Sexton picked up a slight injury in Rome but Schmidt has revealed that both players were involved in some light running at the squad’s open training session at Belfast's Queen's University on Friday.
He added that Sexton will be back in full training next week and will face the French, but Carbery is further behind in his recovery so remains a doubt.
Schmidt said: "They're both on track, Johnny is certainly ahead of Joey. Johnny is going to be fine, he'll train next week. We're hoping that Joey will be fit to train, potentially on Wednesday.
"If he can train Wednesday and do Friday then that's sufficient lead-in that he can be in contention, so we'll just have to wait and see - more so on Joey, but we'd be very confident about Johnny."
