Fans pick Morelos as Rangers' best

8th April 2019, 09:57 by Andy Schooler

Rangers supporters have chosen Alfredo Morelos as the club's player of the year for the 2018/19 season.

The hot-headed striker was presented with the award, decided by the club's fans, at a ceremony on Sunday night.

The Colombian also landed the players' player of the year gong.

Morelos is the Gers' top goalscorer this season having netted 29 goals in all competitions but it is his disciplinary issues which have often caught the eye – as well as his five red cards, he has also been booked 15 times.

Currently serving a four-game ban following his most recent red card in last month's Old Firm derby, Morelos is now targeting finishing as the Scottish Premiership's leading scorer. He currently has 17 league goals, one more than Aberdeen's Sam Cosgrove.

He told Rangers TV: "My target is to be the top scorer in the league this season, that is one of my biggest targets and to keep playing well in the next three games.

"I know they are really important games for me and I've always said that football always gives you another opportunity.

"Now it is time to face these three games as well as possible, one is against Celtic which is going to be a very important game for me. I hope to play well and to keep going and finish the season as well as I can."

On his awards, he commented: "It's something incredible for me.

"My team-mates' support has been really important.

"I'm very happy with all of them; I'm very happy and very proud that they picked me."

He also praised the fans, adding: "I've always said that the fans are 100 per cent supportive. The way they support me is very passionate."
