Rangers on right path with Kent deal – Allen

6th September 2019, 15:13 by James Mason

Rangers director of football Mark Allen says Ryan Kent's signature shows the club are heading in the right direction.

Rangers suffered a huge fall from grace at the end of the 2011/12 season when they were effectively liquidated after entering financial difficulties and, as a result, were demoted down to the third division of Scottish football.

The Gers battled their way back to the Premiership, returning for the 2016/17 campaign where they finished third, and they have continued the steady rebuilding process over the past two years.

Another third-place finish came about in 2017/18 before they went one better last term when ending up second, nine points behind rivals Celtic, who completed an unprecedented ‘treble-treble’.

Steven Gerrard is at the Ibrox helm and he was busy during the summer transfer window, adding Filip Helander, George Edmundson, Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart, Joe Aribo, Steven Davis, Jake Hastie and Andy King to the squad.

More was to come from the former Liverpool captain on transfer deadline day after he managed to acquire the services of Reds starlet Kent, who joined for a fee that could rise to £7.5million, the 22-year-old returning to Glasgow after spending last season on loan with Rangers

Speaking about the late signing, Allen told Sky Sports: “I think it shows progress and that was where we set out to be when I started a few years ago. It had to be steady.

“It bodes well and says a lot about the intent of the directors of Rangers in terms of where they’re trying to get the club.”
