Napoli set sights on Salzburg’s Haaland

9th October 2019, 17:50 by Gareth Freeman

Napoli are plotting a swoop for Red Bull Salzburg striker Erling Haaland but they will face competition from Serie A rivals Juventus.

Haaland joined Salzburg in the January transfer window earlier this year from Norwegian club Molde.

The 19-year-old, who is the son of former Leeds and Manchester City defender Alf-Inge Haaland, has enjoyed a blistering start to the current season with 18 goals in just 11 appearances and unsurprisingly his displays in Austria have not gone unnoticed.

Reports in Italy claim Juventus are keeping tabs on Haaland, having been heavily linked with the youngster prior to his switch to Salzburg, but Napoli could make the first move as they have struggled for goals of late.

The Partenopei sit fourth in Serie A and are already six points adrift of league leaders Juventus after seven games. Napoli have managed 15 goals in Italy’s top-flight, making them the division’s second highest scorers, but in recent weeks they have been less productive in front of goal and have failed to score in three of their last four games across all competitions.

Haaland is under contract at Salzburg until 2023 and the Austrian club are likely to demand a big fee if they are to sell in the winter window.

The Italian duo could face further competition for the teenage forward if he continues to impress and English reports claim Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool intend to send scouts to watch the Norway international in action in the coming weeks.
