Abu Dhabi return for Williams

13th January 2018, 15:01 by James Mason

Serena Williams will reportedly make her return to action at the 10th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

The men's exhibition event in Abu Dhabi will take place at the end of December but world number one Rafael Nadal will not be present after he recently withdrew in order to help his body recovery for next year.

Although the tournament is only open to male players, it is claimed that Williams has been allowed to play a match on Saturday the 30th - the same day as the final - against an as yet unnamed opponent.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has not been in competitive action since winning the Australian Open back in January, having taken time out from the sport to give birth to her first child.

However, the American is planning to defend her title Down Under and playing in Abu Dhabi will be the start of her preparations for the opening major of they year at Melbourne Park.
