Bencic claims Dubai success

23rd February 2019, 18:18 by Tom McGarry

Belinda Bencic has won the Dubai Tennis Championships after overcoming Petra Kvitova 6-3 1-6 6-2 in Saturday's final.

The Swiss ace needed one hour and 45 minutes to see off Australian Open finalist Kvitova, with the victory sealing her third triumph on the WTA Tour and first since winning the Canadian Open in August 2015.

The world number 45 certainly claimed her victory the hard way as Kvitova was the fourth player ranked in the top 10 that she had to overcome at the tournament after she also saw off Aryna Sabalenka, Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina en route to the final.

Bencic admitted she felt amazed after sealing the win and has put her return to the winner's circle down to hard work away from the court.

"This is amazing. I just tried to put as many balls back as possible to create pressure," said Bencic. "I feel great. We worked a lot on my fitness, so maybe that was the secret."

The victory over Kvitova would have tasted extra sweet for Bencic as the Czech star had won all three of their previous meetings in straight sets, including at last month's Australian Open.
