Britain loses top-50 tennis star

15th December 2017, 11:11 by Simon Barlow

Aljaz Bedene is to represent Slovenia once more after giving up his fight to play Davis Cup and Olympic tennis for Great Britain.

The world number 49 has decided to return to live and play for the country of his birth again next year in order to compete at the 2020 Olympics.

Bedene said he does not want to miss out on "two events that mean so much to me" after the International Tennis Federation had continually thwarted his attempts to represent Britain in the Olympics or Davis Cup.

The ITF's decision last year to prevent players representing more than one country from January 2015 effectively ended his chances while a change at the top in Slovenian tennis has eased his path back into the fold.

"I have proudly called Britain my home for the last nine years and so many people there have made me feel welcome both in the UK and abroad," the 28-year-old said in a statement on Friday.

"I am also particularly grateful for the support the LTA have shown me in that time and in fighting my case for the GB Davis Cup eligibility.

"It was a dream of mine to be able to compete for a country that has given me so much in the Davis Cup."

Bedene, who was based in Hertfordshire for six years until recently moving back to Ljubljana, rose through the rankings to become British number two earlier this year.
