Djokovic and Osaka announced as US Open top seeds
Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have been confirmed as the top seeds for the upcoming US Open.
Serbian star Djokovic claimed his third title at Flushing Meadows after beating Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets during last year's final and he will be the top seed in the men's singles.
The world number one certainly has an impressive recent record in Grand Slams, as he has won four of the last five on offer, including his fifth success at Wimbledon last month, with his only failure during that time coming when he was beaten in the semi-finals of this year's French Open by Dominic Thiem.
Rafael Nadal went on to beat Thiem in that final at Roland Garros and he will be the second seed in New York ahead of Roger Federer, who will be looking to claim his sixth US Open crown.
Thiem and Russian Daniil Medvedev, who is fresh from his victory at last week's Cincinnati Masters, complete the top-five, while Britain's Kyle Edmund will be seeded at 30.
On the women's side of the draw, Japanese ace Osaka, who beat Serena Williams to win her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago, will be the top seed after she recently replaced Ashleigh Barty at the top of the WTA rankings.
Australia's Barty will be the second seed, ahead of Karolina Pliskova, Wimbledon champion Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina.
Williams, who will be going in search of a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, will be the eighth seed, while British No 1 Johanna Konta is ranked at 16.
