Edmund win boost for Tsonga
Jo-Wilfred Tsonga said it was "very motivating" to defeat Kyle Edmund at the Grand Prix Hassan II as he makes his comeback from injury.
The 33-year-old Frenchman, who has slipped down to 116th in the world rankings because of knee injury problems last year, was given a wildcard to feature in the Marrakesh clay-court tournament.
And Tsonga impressed as he defeated third seed Edmund 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 in one hour 29 minutes to deny the British number one the chance of at least reaching the final for a second successive year.
Tsonga, who will play Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals, said: "It's always great to beat a Top 20 player and very motivating.
"I will have a day off on Thursday and hope to continue playing well."
Meanwhile, fourth seed Gilles Simon secured a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over Guido Andreozzi to book his place in the last eight.
The 2008 winner, who will face Taro Daniel, said: "Lately, I have played very well in practice, but not during the matches.
"I was happy with how I played. I'm happy with my level during those first two matches on clay and I'm feeling well here in Marrakesh."
